A Not-So Typical Doctor’s Visit

November 21, 2014 By: premasundari5 Comments

My son, Eesen was having a rash all over his body. He gets this quite often due to the heat. If he sweats a lot, he develops a rash. He is one of those “air-cond babies” whereby they need to stay cool all the time. But in Malaysia, its quite impossible to avoid the heat since we are in the tropics.

Anyways, I brought both my kids to the doctor and while driving to the clinic, I casually told Yashzna, “Eesen has a rash, why don’t you explain to the doctor about his problem?” Yashzna agreed to this and was silently rehearsing what she was going to say. I did not pay much attention to this and taught nothing of it. But what the kids did later on in the clinic blew my mind away.

At the reception counter in the clinic, as I was handing Eesen’s IC to the nurse, both my kids walked into the doctor’s room authoritatively (thank god, there was no patient inside..phew!!) and I could hear Yashzna speaking (loudly, actually) to the doctor, “My brother is scratching his hand!” There was quite a commotion in the room. The nurse came out of the doctor’s room, looked at me, smiled and gave me a thumbs up sign. 🙂

The doctor explained to me that my son sat on the patients’ chair and pointed to the rash on his hand while my daughter provided the narrative. He complimented both my kids saying that they are very intelligent. Hmm..looks like I might not need to meet the doctor anymore since my kids are pretty good at explaining things to him! 😛

2 points that occurred to me after this happened:

  • Give them a task and explain to them what needs to be done. Trust them to get it done and chances are they will do it successfully
  • Never, ever underestimate your child. They certainly can do things that will amaze you and leave you dumbfounded

There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots, the other, wings.

Cheers.
